Postcarbon – Design for a Sustainable Lusatia
GREENLAB – Lab for Sustainable Design Strategies at Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin assembled the results of its 2014 project »Postcarbon: Design For A Sustainable Lusatia« in a book. Lusatia is a sparsely populated region, shaped mainly by lignite mines, and economically weakened by de-industrialization. M’s Marketing + Kommunikation GmbH’s project »Laurin« instigated the cooperation with GREENLAB. In 2014, design students at weißensee academy of art berlin were called upon to get to know Lusatia and to develop concepts, strategies, and products that might aid the region’s economic revival. This volume presents these proposals; textual contributions reflect on the intention and problems of this project.

Sustainable design engages with the challenges of climate change, considers species conservation of animals and plants, keeps in mind the waste problem, and contributes to preserving natural resources. In 2010, three professors at the weißensee kunsthochschule berlin — Zane Berzina (Textile and Surface Design), Susanne Schwarz-Raacke (Product Design), and Heike Selmer (Fashion Design) - established GREENLAB – the Lab for Sustainable Design Strategies. The lab’s projects from 2010 to 2013 are now documented in the volume Green Design 1.0, which has just appeared. The book is available from the weißensee kunsthochschule berlin press office.
